OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak paid tribute to the victims of the Moore tornado Tuesday at the Moore Community Remembrance Ceremony.
“We lost mothers, fathers, children and friends on that tragic day,” said Doak. “We will continue to honor their lives by rebuilding our communities even stronger and making sure we are better prepared for the next disaster.”
Commissioner Doak has announced plans to hold a consumer assistance event for tornado survivors with unresolved insurance issues. The forum will take place at Westmoore High School, 12613 S. Western Ave., Oklahoma City, on June 3 at 6:00 p.m.
“We know some survivors are still having some issues,” said Doak. “We want to do all we can to help them wrap up their claim and get on with their lives.”
Tornado survivors have filed nearly 100,000 insurance claims since last year’s tornado outbreak, with insurance payments topping $1.1 billion. Survivors who are not able to attend the forum in person are encouraged to call 1-800-522-0071 for help with insurance claims.
Despite a slower severe storm season this year, Commissioner Doak urged Oklahomans to remain vigilant.
“You can’t let your guard down just because we haven’t seen an EF-4 or an EF-5 tornado yet,” said Doak. “The next catastrophe could be right around the corner. Don’t wait a minute longer. Get your affairs in order right now. Make sure you have adequate insurance coverage.”
Commissioner Doak suggested that Oklahomans take the following preparedness measures:
